TakkStrip is the simplest way to integrate tactile sensing into your projects. The TakkStrip and TakkStrip 2 are completely compatible and interchangeable. You can compare the TakkStrip and TakkStrip 2 here
It consists of 5 sensors end-to-end spaced at 8mm spacing, along with a "traffic cop" microchip that allows the entire strip to be accessed over I2C without address conflicts.

Put them where you want the TakkStrip can be used as a single unit (useful for parallel-jaw grippers, fingers, bumpers, and more), or separated with a dremel into smaller sections or individual taxels that can be placed wherever your project requires.

If the chips are separated, there are breakouts provided to allow easy soldering back to the traffic cop (indicated as "optional wiring" in the diagram above). The hole size is 0.4mm, which is designed to fit 30G solidcore wire.

Up to 8 different TakkStrips can be attached to the same I2C network by setting their addresses using the "address pin" solder jumpers at the base of the strip.
The address is set in binary:
Jumper | Address |
---|---|
O O O | sensors 0 - 4 |
O O X | sensors 5 - 9 |
O X O | sensors 10 - 14 |
O X X | sensors 15 - 19 |
X O O | sensors 20 - 24 |
X O X | sensors 25 - 29 |
X X O | sensors 30 - 34 |
X X X | sensors 35 - 39 |
Power
The strip is designed to work with voltages from 3.6 to 5V

Rubber
The rubber used for cast boards is VytaFlex 20 from Smooth-On, Inc. We recommend using the same material if you want to cast additional structure (such as finger pads) over the sensors (clean the surface first with IPA or alcohol).
Rubber thickness of the cast boards is 3.5mm.
Sensitivity
The sensitivity of the cast sensors depends on the stiffness and thickness of the rubber used, the location of the load over the sensor, and the type of rubber used.
Sensitivity plots for VytaFlex 20 rubber with thicknesses of 4mm, 6mm and 10mm can be found: [here]

Note:
TakkStrip requires an I2C interface to read from a computer.
You can use an arduino or a USB dongle such as the CY3240 USB-I2C Bridge from Cypress (Digikey Part# 428-1910-ND).
For a higher-speed alternative see the TakkFast.
